A federal court on Wednesday blocked an attempt by Texas to delay the EPA's plans to impose carbon regulations in the state early next year.

REDORBIT: President Barack Obama and his administration will enter 2011 pushing for new regulations and diplomacy to fight climate change, but will have to deal with stiff challenges from opponents, according to AFP reports.
The year ends with moderate progress toward a global deal on climate change during the UN-led summit in Cancun, Mexico, where top carbon emitters such as the United States and China finally agreed to move forward.
But US supporters of the deal had their hopes crushed, when a proposal...
Agence France-Presse: Indonesia has chosen its Borneo island to conduct a pilot project aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation, as part of a deal with Norway, an official said Thursday. Norway agreed in May to contribute up to a billion dollars to help preserve Indonesia's forests, in part through a two-year moratorium on the clearing of natural forests and peatlands from 2011. "Central Kalimantan (Borneo) is a province with large forest cover and peat land and has faced a real threat of deforestation,"...
Sydney Morning Herald: PLANTING an area almost the size of Sydney with mallee eucalypts grown specifically to fire electricity generators could provide up to one-tenth of the nation's energy needs within the next 16 years.
The trees, grown in rows as energy crops on farms, could attract enough revenue to pay for the cost of establishing them within five years and would generate a reliable supply of electricity like coal, but with fewer greenhouse emissions, researchers at the Future Farm Industries Co-operative Research...

A replica of the Statue of Liberty, called 'Freedom to pollute' on a hill near the Bella Centre in Copenhagen. The year started on a downer after the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December 2009 failed to produce a deal. The talks were seen as the best chance to agree on a successor to the Kyoto protocol, but ended acrimoniously after several countries rejected...
Guardian: As 2010 draws to a close, it is worth reflecting on what the year has delivered in development terms. Above all, 2010 represents the culmination of a remarkable decade in which talk of progress – across a wide span of development indicators – has once again become respectable, even in the face of unprecedented global events. But while the last decade has delivered a great deal, in truth, 2010 itself is a much harder year to sum up. Not to be deterred, I polled my ODI colleagues and asked them to...
New York Times: In 2007, the Nature Conservancy bought 161,000 acres of forest in the Adirondacks from the Finch, Pruyn paper company for $110 million.
The state of New York paid $30 million on Friday to secure extensive conservation rights on 89,000 acres of forest in the Adirondacks, another big step toward protecting lands once owned by the Finch paper company.
In exchange for the payment, the state got a legal document known as a conservation easement from the Nature Conservancy, the environmental group...

China now stands alone as the most attractive market for renewable energy investment in the world, a position it had previously jointly held with the US, according to Ernst & Young's most recent Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices report.
NYT: Groups Call Government`s Coal Ash Analysis Skewed
The collapse of a retention pond wall at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston Fossil Plant sent 5.4 million cubic yards of toxic muck into the Emory River and the surrounding area.
The Environmental Protection Agency is planning for the first time to regulate the disposal of coal ash, the potentially hazardous residue of the burning of coal in power plants and other large industrial facilities.
The proposed rules are the direct result...

Since the beginning of the decade, energy companies have spent more than $2.5 billion to lobby members of Congress, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. While oil, gas and utility companies have spent most of that money, renewable energy lobbying efforts are also starting to pick up pace.
Australia’s solar power industry is experiencing a boom in customer demand thanks in part to a significant increase in current electricity prices, and a forecast of more price hikes to come. When combined with the generous government rebates and feed in tariffs on offer, the expected price hikes are contributing to a surge in residential [...]

Even though governments throughout the world are vowing to expand green energy, they continue to give far more subsidies to fossil fuels than renewable – 10 to 12 times more, according to recent reports.

Author Craig Shields makes available his best-selling energy book as a free download. The book is based on interviews with 25 of the world's top researchers, authors, analysts and industry leaders. A surprisingly large percentage of these experts point to these "tough realities" that exist in the technology migration, the economic implications, and the political issues that affect the world energy industry. Says Shields, "The truth is, the energy industry faces tough realities in several forms, not only technology readiness, but more importantly the pushback from powerful vested interests."
It is accepted that clean energy technology development will be pivotal in mitigating climate change and that transferring this technology to developing economies will be equally important in making these economies more socially responsible while supporting economic growth.
